It’s time to strike up a conversation about mental health on campus. To kickstart a dialogue and shine light on available supports, the Student Wellness Accessibility Centre is hosting Be Well — BU on Monday, March 20.Held in partnership with the student-run Active Minds club, the public event aims to “normalize mental illness, raise awareness about resources and supports, and to provide information on how students can keep themselves healthy,” said Brock Health Promotion Educator Julie Fennell. It will take place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Pond Inlet. The night will include a resource fair with information about various Brock and community supports, and presentations by undergraduate and graduate students who will share their mental health journeys.Health Sciences Professor Paula Gardner will give a presentation on mindfulness, and author Darcy Patrick will detail how he used running as a form of therapy for his depression.“From a student perspective, it’s important to understand what Brock is doing for us in terms of mental health support and resources,” said Peer Health Educator Jocelyn Corradetti. She’s hopeful students will come away from the event with a better understanding of where to access help when it’s needed.“We want to get the word out that no one is alone and support is available.”Corradetti encouraged students to come with their friends, roommates and their family members to prompt an open discussion about the important topic.“It’s OK to talk about mental health. We want to see that conversation carry on throughout the year,” she said. “We’re normalizing it. We’re breaking down the stigma. We’re showing each other support.”Be Well — BU will be streamed online.Anyone unable to attend or who is more comfortable watching from home can watch the live feed and submit questions to the presenters online, anonymously if they so choose.
