first_imgLetterkenny’s Main Street in the 1980s.Did you know; in June 1932 the Urban District Council had to water the streets every day to keep the dust levels down due to very dry weather.And in the 1950’s the UDC proposed changing the name of Mount Southwell Terrace to Pearse Place while in 1975 a whopping 500,000 gallons of water were used per day in Letterkenny.All these fascinating facts and more on the development of Letterkenny are contained in the new book ‘Reflections and Recollections, Letterkenny Urban District/Town Council 1899-2014’ which will be launched in Donegal County Museum on Wednesday 26th November at 7pm. The book outlines the important role Letterkenny Urban District Council and latterly Town Council played in the development of the town.It highlights the Council’s responsibility for water, roads, sewage, housing and public lighting and their development of the swimming pool, town parks, the Main Street, Market Square and Cathedral Quarter. They also played an important role in the cultural life of Letterkenny through their support of An Grianan Theatre, the Regional Cultural Centre and the Donegal County Museum.The book also contains interviews with the last Town Councillors, previous Councillors and staff, along with other chapters on the legacy of the Town Council compiled by local historians and writers Paddy Walsh and Paul Maguire.The book will be available free of charge and all are welcome to attend launch.
