Tennis Junior Kay Hoey and freshman Michael Drake were the best of the best last week, according to Big West Conference officials. Hoey was selected as the Big West Women’s Golf Athlete of the Month after winning the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational last week, her fourth tournament win in her 49er career. Hoey, who was also selected the Big West Women’s Golf Athlete of the Month in September, shot a two-over 146 to claim the title. Drake was selected as the Big West Men’s Golf co-Athlete of the Month. He shares the honor with UC Irvine’s Brian Edick. Drake finished in third place at the John Burns Intercollegiate, shooting a 10-under 206. Softball The 49er softball team will host their annual Long Beach Tournament this weekend at Mayfair Park. Action begins on Friday at 11:45 a.m., with first games on Saturday and Sunday scheduled for 9 a.m. Joining the 49ers this weekend will be UCLA, Notre Dame, Canisius, Eastern Kentucky and Southern Utah. Track and field Seniors Jimmy Grabow and Ronald Carter will represent LBSU at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR this weekend. Grabow currently ranks sixth nationally in the 5000-meter with a school-record mark of 13:44.04. He also holds the school record in the 3000-meter event. Grabow will run in the 5000-meter on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Carter holds the school-record in the triple jump, at 52’7.25″ and ranks third nationally. Carter begins his quest for a second- consecutive All- American certificate Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Men’s basketball Senior Aaron Nixon has scored 533 points this season, which ranks No. 15 on the school’s single-season chart. Nixon has also tallied 959 career points in just two seasons.
