first_imgFRISCO, Texas – UIW’s Sebastian Mortier is the Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by This is the Cardinals’ third consecutive weekly award. Gabriel Evans was named the Player of the Week on April 3 and Paco Bendana claimed the honor last week. Mortier and doubles partner Gabriel Evans clinched the doubles point in both of UIW’s victories this past week, winning 6-4 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Abilene Christian. In both of his singles matches, Mortier gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead en route to UIW winning its first conference title. The junior from Hanau, Germany, defeated the Islanders’ Thomas Rodrigues 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 flight and Abilene Christian’s Niko Moceanu 7-6, 6-2 at the same slot.   Mortier helped UIW (11-9, 5-0 SLC) earn its first Southland regular season championship and the No. 1 seed at the 2018 Southland Conference Tournament behind two victories over then-unbeaten conference opponents, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (18-8, 3-1 SLC) and Abilene Christian (14-10, 3-2 SLC). Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted.
