After defeating St. Kitts in the first match of the tournament, President of the St. Kitts/Nevis Volleyball Association told the coaches of the Dominica Men’s National team to accept the early Christmas gift. Dominica went on defeat Montserrat and hosts British Virgin Islands to gain the top position in the round robin stage of the NORCECA World Cup Qualifiers in the BVI’s. St. Kitts meanwhile, settled for the second spot in the stage to set up a finals meeting with Dominica.The Dominicans gracefully accepted the gift and were determined to get another “gift” at the expense of St. Kitts. Both teams fought hard and were less than willing to give up the lead to the other, thus, exchanging points up to the end in the first set. Dominica, however, prevailed taking the set with a score of 25 – 22.St. Kitts was not about to succumb to Dominica’s pressure and went on take the second set (19-25) by taking advantage of Dominica’s poor blocking and passing. They also grabbed the third set (20-25) and looked determine to avenge their earlier defeat.The fourth set was a nail biter as both teams again exchanged points and were unwilling to be bettered by the other team. With great spiking from Ronald Bruno, who was virtually unstoppable, and smart thinking by setter Ray Robinson, Dominica eventually closed out the set (25-23) to force a fifth and deciding set.Dominica rushed out in front in the fifth and took an early 8 – 4 lead. St. Kitts put on a show and drew within two with the scores at 10-8. Some formidable attack from Ronald Bruno staved off the St. Kitts rally to extend the lead to 12-9. Two crucial errors by veteran David Toussaint allowed St. Kitts to even up the score at 13-13. Ronald Bruno was determined to keep Dominica alive and setter Ray Robinson continued to trust him. At 14-13, the block took over and stopped hard-hitting Shawn Seabrookes of St. Kitts to win the set 15-13 and the match (3-2). Team Dominica went undefeated in the tournament.The Dominica Team again thanked SKAVA president for yet another “gift”; this time, the Gold Medal.Dominica also copped some individual awards with skipper Johnny Seraphine grabbing the awards for best server and best digger and Ronald Bruno for best spiker. David Toussaint was tournament MVP.Up next for Dominica will be the 2012 ECVA Super Six finals later this year.By: Robert Guistelast_img
